Marvel's Midnight Suns
This game is a card battler with an additional 1st person
over-the-shoulder story mode where you wander around a small pocket
dimension, interacting with people, and picking up and spending
resources.
I got bored about a third of the way through the game and uninstalled
it. It really started feeling like an endless slog.
THE GOOD:
- Very high-budget graphics and sound.
- Features lots of Marvel characters you might like, such as Spider
Man, Blade, the Avengers, and (unsurprisingly) the Midnight Suns.
- The card battles have some interesting innovations: a 2D fighting
arena your characters can move around in, the concept of easy to kill
"minions" (you can have fun beating up) vs more powerful "elites" (who
are an actual challenge), and reinforcements that arrive after each
round of battle.
- Well-structured ramp-up and tutorials explain all the important
concepts as you go along.
THE BAD:
- Pretty much all of the gameplay outside of the card battles sucks
hard. You spend 50% of overall play time doing fetch quests,
hanging out with superheroes, and spending a huge array of resources to
get minor powerups. It's really boring and sucks up time without
providing any fun. I suppose that the game developers felt these extra
mechanics should have some point so they tied them into combat by
providing combat benefits—but this means you're obligated to
engage with these mechanics or you'll fall behind in combat
ability!
- The hangouts might be cool if you think the Marvel super-heroes are
awesome. I don't. I think they are super lame. Their origin stories are
wacky and bizarre and it yanks me out of any suspension of
disbelief.
- Most of the dialogue is stale, and despite the high budget in other
areas, the voice actors are uninspiring. This is particularly true of
the main protagonist you control (Hunter), who speaks in a monotone like
someone that's been possessed.
- The plot is your typical superhero I'm doing Evil because I am Evil
nonsense.
- The McGuffins are the typical word salad you might expect
(e.g. "Oh no! He's going to invert the artifact's gamma
polarity if we don't stop him!")
THE UGLY:
- I didn't encounter any bugs or anything offensive, so I guess that's
a win?
