How
to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying by Django Wexler
This is a novel about a character named Davi who is trapped in a time
loop. Her task is to save the Kingdom from the Dark Lord. Every time she
dies she just starts again from the beginning. I would say that this
book is kind of a raunchy mashup of Groundhog
Day and A
Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, but apparently the author
considers neither of these to be a source of inspiration for
the story.
THE GOOD
- It's funny and raunchy.
- The protagonist Davi is rather likeable and it's fun to follow along
her improbable story.
- There is nice worldbuilding, discovery, and action.
- Django
Wexler is not a pen name. It is the author's real name
(although Django is his middle name, it's the one he uses in everyday
life).
THE BAD
- I was expecting the whole time loop thing to have a bit more
importance in the story, honestly. It affects the beginning of the story
but then fades away to the background until the very end.
- The ending is rather abrupt. I would have liked to have gotten a
satisfying conclusion in this novel rather than having to wait
until the sequel.
- I don't feel like the protagonist had any real character arc.
THE UGLY
- There is a lot of swearing, dying, suicide, and sex in this story.
It is definitely meant for adults. There is even a trigger
warning at the start of the book due to all the suicide! The book falls
short of being a fully pornographic work, though.
